What is a cookie?

Cookies are text files that contain a small amount of information that are downloaded to your device when you visit a website. Cookies are then sent back to the original website on each subsequent visit, or when you visit a site that recognizes the cookie. They are useful because they allow a website to recognize a user’s device.

Cookies perform multiple functions, such as allowing you to navigate efficiently between pages, remembering your preferences, and generally improving the user experience. They can also help ensure that the advertisements you see on a site are more interesting to you, based on your interests.

Some cookies contain personal information – for example, if you click on the “remember me” tab when you log in, a cookie will store your username. Most cookies do not collect information that identifies you and will instead collect more general information such as how the user arrived at the site and uses our websites, and the user’s general location.

There are primarily four types of cookies:

  • Session cookies last only for the duration of the session. They are deleted when the user closes the browser.
  • Persistent cookies remain after the user closes the session. They are kept on the user’s hard drive until they expire (persistent cookies are designed with an expiration date) or until the user deletes the cookies. Persistent cookies are used to collect identifying information about the user, such as their surfing behavior or preferences for a specific website.
  • First party” cookies belong to the site you choose to go to.Third-party” cookies are imported from a site whose content is accessible indirectly, for example via an image or a banner.

Most browsers support them (Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Netscape, Safari, etc.). However, users can set their browser to disable cookies or they can delete them.

What cookies do we use?

Generally, we use cookies to perform four different functions:

  • Essential cookies

Some cookies are essential to perform operations on our website and pages. For example, some cookies allow us to identify the user and ensure that the user can access registration or log in to pages.

These cookies do not include information about you that could be used for marketing purposes or remember where you have been on the Internet. This category of cookies should not be disabled. If a user chooses to disable these cookies, they will not be able to access all of the content on the pages they visit.

  • Performance and analysis cookies

These cookies collect information about how visitors use the website, such as which pages visitors view most often and whether they receive error messages from certain pages. These cookies do not collect information that identifies you. Any information these cookies collect is anonymous and is only used to improve the operation of the website.

  • Functional cookies

We may use functional cookies that allow us to remember your preferences. For example, these cookies will save you from having to re-enter your username each time you access a site and remember your selected preferences, such as the regional edition of the website you want to see when you log in. We may also use functionality cookies to provide you with enhanced services that may, for example, allow you to view a video online or comment on a blog.

  • Behaviorally targeted advertising cookies

We and our advertisers may use cookies to provide you with advertisements that we believe are relevant to you, based on your interests. For example, if you read a number of articles on our website or other sites about mechanical engineering, an automobile manufacturer may deduce that you are interested in that topic and provide you with advertisements about their cars. You may see these advertisements on our website and on other websites you visit. However, we do not tell our advertisers who you are.

Does anyone else use cookies on our website?

Advertisers sometimes use their own cookies to provide you with targeted advertising. For example, advertisers may use a profile they have built based on sites you have previously visited to show you more relevant ads while you are visiting our website and pages. We believe that it is useful for our users to see ads that are more relevant to their interests. If you are located in the European Union and would like to learn more about how advertisers use these types of cookies or to opt out of receiving them, please visit www.youronlinechoices.eu

We also use or allow third parties to use cookies that fall into the four categories described above. For example, we use third-party analytical cookies to help us measure traffic to our website. We may also use third-party cookies to help us with market research, revenue tracking, improving site functionality, and assessing compliance with the Terms and Conditions and Copyright Policy.

You can also control and delete these cookies through your browser settings.

How do I control and delete cookies on my browser?

The ability to allow, reject or delete cookies can also be provided at the browser level. To do this, follow the instructions provided by your browser (usually located under the “Help”, “Tools” and “Edit” tabs). Rejecting a cookie or categories of cookies does not delete the cookies from your browser. You will need to do this yourself from your browser. Remember that if you choose to disable cookies, some parts of our website will not function properly.
